Ethnomusicologist John Collins has done it again! You might
recall my praises of his release "Vintage Palmwine,"
a collection of acoustic palmwine music performed by the genre's heroes and recorded by Collins at his Bokoor ("cool")
Studios north of Ghana's capital, Accra, in the 1980's.
Collins has just released a new collection of music recorded at Bokoor in the 1970's, called "Bokoor Beats."
This time, the music is electric, both in terms of amplifcation and the raw energy it contains! Most of the recordings are by Collins' own Bokoor Band, but the
compilation also features key tracks by other Ghanaian highlife artists such as the great T.O. Jazz as well as the Oyikwam Internationals. If you love
African music, you'll love this latest compilation from John Collins. Check out the Calbash Music samples I've placed on the page, especially the track "Anoma Franoas."
If that doesn't get you moving, rigor mortis has obviously taken effect.
